Can you paint spray wood ?

The simple answer is, yes. However spraying wood is not that simple, you should be asking your self many things before picking up any paint to spray paint wood like:

  • What type of wood am I spraying?

    • MDF- medium density fibre, this is an engineered wood. Mixing hard and soft wood fibres and combining them with a resin. They are then formed into panels by applying pressure making it very dense.
    • Oak- oak is a natural hard wood from an oak tree which is cut down and cut to shape. Very strong and heavy oak is normally used as furniture and is extremely long lasting
    • Soft woods – soft woods normally come from less dense trees such as cedar, pine and fir. This wood is normally used with in the house hold as skirting boards and architraves and doors due to it flexibility.
  • Is the wood virgin wood or old wood

    • old wood – old wood can be settled nicely however it may years of varnish or started to rot. varnish can react with the paint and cause additional reactions and problems
    • New wood – new wood being sprayed in a home may not have had time to settle so may have slight movement causing cracks on the edges once painted
  • Has the wood been treated

    • has the wood been treated in any way has it been treated from the manufacturer or does is have layer of paint or varnish
  • Does the wood have any wet or dry rot

    • when wood gets wet like old windows you may find spongy areas this will be wet rot, wet rot should not be sprayed and the unit will need replacing unless you have the skill set to remove the area and fix before applying any products.
    • Dry rot is where the wood has no moisture and collected bacteria it will start to decay in your hands like a dust. You can not spray this type of wood as it surface is to unstable and will start to crumble

Blockers and primers

Soft and hard wood naturally has oils that come to the surface, these oils and liquids will repel coatings over time and causing the coating to become unadhered from the surface. When you paint spray wood Dynamic Spray would highly recommended using blockers and high build primers to help adhesion and stop oils from bleeding through

  • Blockers – These are used to stop oils and contaminants bleeding through to the surface
  • High build primers – These are used to cause better adhesion to the wood and stop the top coat from reactions creating a more even and smoother surface

Can I paint spray wood like MDF?

MDF is made up of fibre and resin. The glues and resin within the wood and the top coats we apply need a barrier of blockers and primers. If MDF does not have primers the surface will look very uneven and patchy where the coating has sunk into the wood, Dynamic Spray would say you will need a minimum of two coat of primer on MDF with sanding with 240/320 grit sand pads in between, Only then when you can see no MDF you should be applying top coats.

What’s the best spray paint for wood?

wood spray paint

The best wood spray paint can be found at morrells. Primers blockers and top coats can be found from morrells wood finishes

4 basic stages of spraying MDF :

  1.  sand 240 grit
  2.  prime and sand 240 grit
  3.  prime and sand 320 grit
  4. top coat

Can I spray paint wood like, hard and soft wood ?

All hard woods and soft woods can be sprayed as long as there is no rot. You must take into account the time the wood has been in the home if you are spraying domestic and to weather it has settled, contracted and expanded enough over time, fresh virgin wood will need a more caulk with a more elasticity around the edges. Wood that has settled (2/3 years old) this will not need as much attention when talking about expansion but you may have more contaminants so make sure to use those blockers and primers

all wood spray paint is recommended by Dynamic Spray to be bought from morrells
