Airless Spraying
What is airless spraying:
Airless spraying is a form of spraying that allows larger areas and thicker paints to be applied, unlike air assisted spraying (gravity guns) which atomize through air assistance. Airless guns can not be adjusted in width and thickness unless you change the fluid tip or the pressure of the machine. The thicker the paint the more pressure and larger tip size you will need. This helps to get extremely thick coatings on to porous surfaces or surfaces that need a larger paint coverage. There are a number of uses when it comes to an airless sprayers, here is a list of work we have used the airless sprayer for:
What can be airless sprayed:
- Walls, brick stone
- Roofing
- Commercial cladding
- Render
- Ships and boats
- Interior spraying
- Intumescent spraying
- Containers

Airless spraying for your home
Internal plastered wall spraying: When it comes to internal spraying with an airless sprayer there are a couple of things we need to take into consideration such as, has it been freshly plastered and is the home being occupied the reason for this is:
- A freshly plastered surface needs to be treated in a slightly different way, the first coat must always be a mist coat, this is a 50/50 mix of water and paint, this thins the paint to allow it to soak into the surface then we back roll the paint to push the paint into the surface. The second coat would be a full spray of 90% paint and 10% water ( this would change depending on you paint type) in your base colour (normally white), this would then be back rolled. The third coat would be sprayed in your finish colour and this would not need back rolling, normally you would not need to water this down to get the right consistency but some paints may need 10
- Is the home being occupied, internal water based paints are not going to have a detrimental effect on your health, however, we do tend to only spray rooms or full houses that are not being occupied. There can be a considerable amount of over spray made using an airless sprayer. Covering all items within a room before spraying is a must. Spraying walls with airless sprayers is there to speed up the process and remove brush marks which is another reason why a heavy trafficked home is not great as we dont want any damages by catching wet paint.
Here are some before and afters of a internal airless sprayer job we have completed. This customer had all his paneling sprayed in our air assisted service and all the freshly plastered walls coated in every room upstairs and downstairs.

Media Walls
Media walls have been a massive craze over the past five years or so. Sometimes they are made out of wood and sometimes there made from fresh plaster. This media wall was made from fresh plaster, following our process we applied a mist coat, two base coats then one final coat of colour.

External walls and render spraying: External walls have many different surfaces , standard brick, render, pebble dash and cladding. All these surfaces tend to need slightly different approaches to there preparation and approach for the best longevity:
- Standard Brick: Bricks need jet washing so that they are clean and free from contamination, stabilizing solution should then be used to stop the porous surface from creating dust and repelling the coating, then airless spraying masonry paint, as this would be the most suitable paint for external use.
- Render: Jet washing the render free from contaminants and left to dry , masonry paint or specialist K Rend paint can be used here.
- Pebble dash: Jet wash to clean from contaminants, masonry paint can be used but always account fore more paint for coverage due to the deep and uneven surface.
- Cladding: wood and plastic PVC cladding
- Wood: You must make sure there is no wet or dry rot, if there is this must be dug away and filled or replaced, jet washed and cleaned so there are no contaminants, sanding is then important to create a good key and a smooth surface
- Plastic: Clean with a surface prep cleaner, sand to the correct grit to create smoothness and create a good key to the surface. Sprayed with paint with elasticity property for expansion and contraction. Airless spraying and air assisted guns can be used for this surface for more advice on this topic click the contact page above. Here are some before and after pictures of brick and render jobs completed:
The first is a customers swimming pool and bar area that had airless spraying on the brick work and air assisted on the aluminium bifold doors and wooden fascias and soffits.
The second is the same customer, where we used an airless spraying service on the main home and brighten it up from cream to white.
Man City /LFC Airless Spraying Project
We are delighted in order to have worked along side the most talented street art company’s in the UK. Murwalls are one of the biggest street art company’s in Britain, so when had a phone call from Marc the owner we obviously jumped at the opportunity to be apart of there amazing work. Our role was to create a blank canvas ready for the artists to work there magic over the city of Liverpool.
We started with a domestic job in the heart of Manchester at a customer we had visited the year previous to spray his uPVC. The customer was very passionate about his love for Liverpool football club and wanted a 7m by 6m mural sprayed over his existing mural by the artist at Murwalls. We set out with our small airless spraying machine to paint brick wall white ready for the new mural, in only one day the job was complete and ready for Murwalls to work there magic.
How it started: As you can see the work completed was astounding are we are delighted to play our very small part in this work, especially when it is on one of our repeat customers homes
…………
Hoodrich cover up: Another job arose before the initial Liverpool projects begun and this was at the custard factory in Birmingham. The amazing work that was originally done by Murwalls of the Hoodrich brand but needed to be covered ready for the next art piece to start. So we headed down to Birmingham being fully licenced and iPAF ready and took on this large building with our airless sprayer and masonry paint (brick wall paint)
…………
Jurgen klopp: The Liverpool project brought us to one of the most amazing pieces of artwork we have seen by Murwalls. The Jurgen Klopp mural is nothing but outstanding skill by the artists. Our participation was to create a base coat ready for the artist. We applied two coats stabilizing solution ensuring to make the wall dust free and ready for the masonry paint to adhere. Once dry we used three coats of masonry paint using the Graco ultra max 2, 695 pro contractor.
…………
Paddy the Baddy and Molly Meatball: Just between Liverpool and Everton football clubs we took part in this mural for the two Liverpool UFC stars Paddy Pimblett (Paddy the baddy) & Molly McCann (Molly Meatball). As this wall used to have a large billboard, it had left some rather large holes in the mortar, we filled these hole and applied stabilizing solution to the create a surface ready to paint, three coats of black masonry paint. This amazing chrome sprayed artistry was born two days later by yet again the amazing team at Murwalls.
…………
John Barnes: The bottom half of the wall had just been re-pointed, as this was the case, we needed two coats of stabilising solution to stop the dust from building up on the wall. Then airless spraying the whole wall in three coats of black for this John Barnes Mural
…………
Neal & Cally/ Remembrance Mural: The street artists at Murwalls need two colours on this property white and red. After a coat of stabilizing solution we applied white over both walls as a base, then the remembrance wall was given more coats until the wall had been fully covered, we then cleaned the lines and started on the red, with the white base coat the red really stands out bright and vibrant ready for the artist to do there job.
